In SFY 2009, The Friends of the Tybee
Theater received a $20,000 Georgia Heritage grant, funded with revenue
from sales of the historic preservation license plate, to repair
the windows and doors on the historic Tybee Theater, located on
Tybee Island.

Dagmar Nelson of Athens said she bought her tag because,
"I think Georgia is worth preserving, although some of my
friends laugh at the thought. I drive around the state as much as
time and money allow and photograph the forgotten places, often
wishing they could be preserved other than on film. I was glad to
see that the money from the tag is used to fund smaller projects
such as an old schoolhouse or hotel, places that often go
unnoticed. The photo was taken at a place just outside of
Athens. To the left just outside the photo sits UGA's old Red Barn
which is slowly collapsing, which is sad. Good luck in your
mission!"

Mark Frissell of Savannah said
he bought the tag because he is a preservationist and is proud to
support Statewide Preservation efforts. He feels historic
preservation is the ultimate in recycling and conserving resources
and energy. Check out Mark's clever tag
frame!

go?
$22 from each $25 annual special tag fee will
go to HPD's Georgia Heritage Grant Program, which provides
funding for historic preservation projects around the
state. See where these grants have been awarded -
1995-2007.
Last year's (SFY 2006) funding level was only $129,000, although
applications totaled over $1 million in matching grant
requests.
While the goal for the Georgia Heritage
Grant Program is $5 million/year, funding peaked in SFY 2002 at
$500,000.
In the past 11 years, the Georgia Heritage Grant Program through
HPD has granted more than $3 million in matching funds to over 208
